Starting from the Antiquarium Archaeological Museum, near which you can visit the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maddalena, the famous Gothic bell tower, you embark upon the waters of the Lake, crossing the so-called Zoca de l'oli, until you reach the isola Comacina.
Only Lake Como was the story of Como in Roman and medieval resulting in a military, political, as well as a fulcrum oppidum, one of the most important religious centers of the diocese. The size of the island's history to hold the mythical place from which would sort the ars walls of Magistri Comacini, and also from which would leave the entire development process of the medieval Italian art. The splendid story of Comacina seems to stop abruptly in 1169, the annus horribilis which marked his tragic fate: destroyed and burned to the ground by the comaschi and Barbarossa, the island declined rapidly, finishing in later centuries in a State of disrepair. Prized for its lush nature and feature beautiful views, the Comacina Island regained the honour of a time since 1900, through the construction of three houses for artists, Rationalist style, intended to make the island a hearth of art, and thanks to a series of archaeological excavations conducted by Ugo Monneret de Villard (1914) and Luigi Mario Belloni (1958-1978). To them is credited with helping to define what is today the Comacina Island: an archaeological site whose importance goes beyond the local boundaries, much to make her place among the most interesting archaeological areas of Northern Italy to the middle ages.
Remains of a Roman-era marble Colonnade stored under the St John's Church, early Christian evidences how the unusual courtroom two-APSED structure with mosaic fragments and frescoes, and also numerous remains of Romanesque churches, among which the crypt of the basilica of Sant'Eufemia and squared stone walls of the complex of Saints Faustino and Giovita: this is the precious artistic heritage of Comacina along with the many exhibits that were recovered during archaeological campaigns and that are displayed in the Museum Antiquarium in Ossuccio
