Even though the hotel is definitely dated (built in 1962) it can be considered the pride of the Accor group. The rooms are reasonably renovated, but defintely do not stay in a standard room unless you would want to be in a shoebox. Back in the 60's hotel rooms were tiny and bathrooms were down the floor, so they would have to rescale the whole hotel to make up for that shortcoming. Once a complimentary upgrade is given to you, you can be in heaven here. After a good night's sleep in the extremely comfortable beds you can enjoy the breakfast until 11 (12 on weekends) unlike other places that seem to hate sleepy birds that just want to sleep in and just shut down the breakfast at 10 on the nose. Great service seems to be a virtue at this hotel. When you decide on your own to have your breakfast out on the terrace, they're kind enough to set up your table when you come back out again wheeling in all the goodies of the complimentary breakfast buffet. Wow, that's being truly attentive in a service desert like Germany. No hassle about additional charges for a breakfast that is usually not always included in the room rate like in many other hotels in Germany. This breakfast is simply complimentary without any questions asked for your room number or so. So is the Internet, which is not the standard in Germany unfortunately. They love to nickel and dime you for the internet. Altogether a very pleasant stay in probably one of the best five-star hotels with a prime location in the city of Cologne, which, however, is only rated as a four-star plus, but if you find a padded blouse hanger in the closet you immediately assume you're in a five-star property. That's usually a dead giveaway.
