What a gem of a hotel. Definitely the best hotel in Datong and is worth every $ and coming to Datong to just stay here! It is located less than a minute walk off a main road in a non car street. Tucked away off the main tourist street but still only a walk minute away. Centrally located in the old city and short walking distance to a lot of the sites. It is definitely a boutique hotel architecturally designed and tastefully decorated to look like one of the old homes or inns from ancient China but with all the modern amenities like hot cold running water, AC, heat, electronic room keys. It is a quiet oasis. Beautiful courtyard where you can quietly sit and relax with bonsai plants and flowers all over. Everywhere you look is a feast for the eyes with old relics, Chinese and western art and furniture. Very tastefully decorated — someone definitely know what they were doing. The bedding and mattress was definitely imported and internationally 5 star hotel standard! Very comfortable mattress with the right amount of firmness and the bedding is clean soft and comfortable and no musty smell. I like the fact that the hotel is quite exclusive in that the doors are always closed and only allow hotel guests to come in. The rooms had absolutely no smoke smells. The staff and hospitality was amazing. Warm and dignified. A special thanks to Marcos at the front who was always looking out for our needs. English is spoken by most of the staff — and If nor always a smile and a greeting. The owner actually spent some time in PEI Canada for his schooling. The breakfast was pretty incredible and delicious with real coffee and a choice of Chinese or western breakfast. The supper there is also very good and better and definitely cleaner than most restaurants outside. You have to let them know that you are coming back for supper and suggest what you would like to eat. They will try to accommodate you. What started out as a 3 nights stay ended up to be 5. I would definitely recommend anyone visiting Datong to stay here.

So if you are looking for somewhere cheap to stay and cheap food with local prices — this might not be the place for you. If you are looking for an authentic experience and enjoyed staying in a classy boutique hotel — Yunzhong is the place for you. The main tourist street is still under construction so a lot of the shops are not open yet but everything looks like it will be up and finished soon. The staff at Yunzhong make you feel like an honored guest at someone’s incredible ancestral home. Absolutely love it here.
