Creating a boutique mini-resort in a disused pump-house and associated infrastructure, a unique part of Tasmania's hydro-power electricity generation era (1930's-50's), standing both in the wilderness whilst looking across a lake to the wilderness, was a stroke of creativity, resourcefulness and visionary. Engaging the right designers — sympathetic to the concept of retaining the 20th century, functional, industrial look-and-feel externally while making the internal fit-out practical yet luxurious — was probably more good management and good taste than good luck; it works so well. (This is, after all, the 'era of authenticity'. ) The hospitality arrangements — because the staff have been as carefully selected as all the other design elements — are clever, generous, professional and sensible. It was too wet and bleak* during our stay to do much walking, bike-riding or boating, but the magnificent log fires and convivial company of our fellow-vacationers were probably more enjoyable and interesting anyway. (*To be fair, the near mid-Winter sleet was intermittent — meaning we could walk the lake shoreline, while watching out for the next rain-squall — and when the rain-cloud lifted, we had freshly-snow-covered mountains to exhilarate us. ) All the while, we were surrounded by white-horses breaking on a dark, choppy lake; in fact, our luxurious accommodation was 250meters out in the middle of the lake. An exhilarating, refreshing and memorable stay. Thanks to a lot of talented people, including the friendly staff, and the other vacationers.
